25.05.2008 - μ:avit VJ Conference

Saturday, May 10th, 2008

Since the successful AVIT>C23 in December 2006 we’ve been looking for opportunities to continue our Berlin vj conferences. With the Chaos Computer Club we’ve been in tents in the summer and underground in the winter. Now in the form of DMY, a crew who organizes annual design tradefairs and exhibitions around the city and beyond, we have a partnership that should allow us to go even further.

VisualBerlin participated at DMY in 2007 and it worked out really well. This year DMY is hosting video installations and VJ showcases curated by VisualBerlin and we have decided to organize a one-day mini VJ conference alongside the festival - the microAVIT at DMY. For 2009 the micro will change into a macro and we are already making plans for a big AVIT event…

VISUALBERLIN AV NIGHT
Saturday, August 18

STEVE NALEPA (LA) - ambient glitch dub
MOGREENS (B) - broken downbeat grooves
RETURN OF THE SPACE INVADERS (B) - post retro audiovisuals
VJ SYNESTHETE (LA) - a visual sensory experience
=FF= (B) - narrative ego visuals

@ K:ITA - Weidenweg 44-46/Bersarin Platz, Berlin Friedrichshain

Start: 21:00 - Open End

Unkostenbeitrag: 5 EUR

LA-based electronic musician, multimedia artist and mad scientist collector Steve Nalepa combines deep dub bass, glitchy breaks, bioacoustic atmospheres and beautiful sinewave melodies to create his patented brand of ambient glitch dub. Nalepa has performed at The Do Lab Stage at Coachella 2007, produced tracks with legends such as Bill Laswell and Pharoah Sanders, and shared a bill with Amon Tobin, Cut Chemist and DJ Spooky.

Todd, aka. VJ Synesthete from LA, comes from a post-production and documentary film making background. He spent a number of years working for Technicolor Creative Services and on documentary projects around the world. The growth of the American Rave Scene in the early nineties motivated Todd to expand his artistic repertoire by fusing video with music live in a club setting. Todd continues to bring cinematic influences to his work as a live performer. Todd draws from a wide range of cult cinema and motion graphics material to composite his live performances into a unique brew for consumption by a thirsty public parched by the desert of traditional media experiences.

RETURN OF THE SPACE INVADERS is all about remixing popculture. Taking the full depth of all AUDIOVISUAL media ever made since the arcade game spaceinvaders hit the market. RETURNOFTHESPACEINVADERS is NOT bleep, micro or tekno, it is called POST-RETRO. New technologies and self build software are ingredients to unique blendscape of different AUDIO/VISUAL mash-up styles and techniques. RETURNOFTHESPACEINVADERS has a audio visual performance where SYNCHRONIZED video and music are performed and jammed.

=ff= is a joint venture of the video artists fRED and Kiritan Flux from Berlin. Both share a cranky affinity towards pixilated and pixelated substance and appearance. They are permanently working on the communication between the visual artist and the obsever. The =ff= method to achieve this is presenting an exaggerated self glorification withing the narrative content of the shown short-films on screen and on stage at the same time. =ff= equip themselves with odd costumes, film each other and spontaneously interweave fictional actions and short narratives into their gonzo style perception of the local surrounding.

The K:ITA started on the first of June 2007 as a temporarily (and through this enduring) crossmedial art-project in Berlin at Bersarinplatz in Friedrichshain. A creative oasis with a garden and art-studios right in the heart of Berlin. 22 artists and groups from the Netherlands, France, USA, Italy, England, Australia, Germany… etc. join the “kitty” and work together for one year. In the former DDR - Kindergarden many different arts are collaborating: sound, video, lightdesign, fine arts, music, painting, sculpture, fashion, webdesign, performance, printing, dance, New Network Technology, photography. Most of the artists of the group already worked together in former exhibitions and events.

Official Press Text:
After a successful interconnection of the VJ scene with the annual hacker conference Chaos Communication Congress in the past, OpenAirVIT in 2003 at the Chaos Communication Camp near Berlin, AVIT^c3 in 2004 and the cooperation of the new born local video artists association VC Visual Berlin last year, the international visualist gathering will take place in Berlin again at this years 23C3 event in late december. Staged at the center point of the 23C3″s Art & Beauty exhibits hall and with access to the conference and workshop rooms and in cooperation with the art gallery M12, AViT will be producing a programme drawn solely from the audiovisualist artist community”s input. Besides moving imagery galore exploring the vast variety of the artform called “VJing”, AViT>C23 will offer an equally wide theoretical and technical range of examination of technique, form and content of live video art.

A melange of different workshops and lectures presented by the artists will cover technical aspects just as well as dealing with the status quo and the future of audiovisual art. Besides the educational and showcase programme, AViT>C23 acts as meeting point and platform for exchange and discussion between the artists themselves and with the audience.

AViT>C23 is proud to welcome visualists from Austria, Argentina, Brazil, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Israel, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, United Kingdom and the United States of America to make this event an international conference in the unique AViT tradition.

AViT>C23 is hosted and organised by VC Visual Berlin in cooperation with M12, c-base and the CCC.
